Fun Things to Do in San Diego in October: A Local’s Guide to Fall

Looking for fun things to do in San Diego in October? From beach days and outdoor festivals to pumpkin patches, Halloween celebrations, and weekend adventures, October is one of my favorite times of year to enjoy everything San Diego has to offer.

While much of the country is settling into cooler temperatures, San Diego often holds onto its sunshine well into fall. The summer crowds begin to thin out, the beaches are still beautiful, and the calendar fills up with events for families, couples, and anyone looking for a fun way to spend the weekend.

As a San Diego local and Realtor, I love this time of year because it gives you the best of both worlds: coastal living, outdoor adventures, and plenty of seasonal activities. Here are some of my favorite ways to enjoy San Diego County in October.

1. Spend a Fall Day at the Beach

One of the best things about living in San Diego is that beach days don't have to end when summer does. October is a great time to visit the coast, enjoy a morning walk, grab lunch near the water, or catch a beautiful sunset.

A few of my favorite coastal spots include:

  • La Jolla Cove: Take in the ocean views, explore the village, and walk along the coastline.
  • Mission Beach: Enjoy the boardwalk, ride the Giant Dipper roller coaster at Belmont Park, or grab a bite near the sand.
  • Del Mar: Take a leisurely beach walk and explore the shops and restaurants along the coast.
  • Encinitas: Spend the afternoon exploring downtown, checking out local surf shops, and enjoying the laid-back beach-town atmosphere.
  • Coronado: Walk along the wide sandy beach, browse Orange Avenue, and enjoy the views of the Hotel del Coronado.

October is also a great reminder that San Diego's coastal neighborhoods each have their own personality. Whether you prefer the energy of Mission Beach or the relaxed feel of Del Mar, there is a coastal community for just about every lifestyle.

2. Visit a San Diego Pumpkin Patch

Fall wouldn't be complete without a pumpkin patch! Whether you're planning a family outing, looking for seasonal photos, or simply want to get into the Halloween spirit, San Diego County has several great options.

Here are a few to check out:

  • Bates Nut Farm in Valley Center: A longtime fall favorite with pumpkins, hayrides, and family-friendly activities.
  • Goff Family Pumpkin Patch at Liberty Station: A convenient option in Point Loma with pumpkins, festive photo opportunities, and lawn games.
  • Oma's Pumpkin Patch in Lakeside: A fun destination for families with children, featuring play areas and seasonal activities.
  • Mr. Jack O' Lanterns Pumpkin Patch: A central San Diego option with pumpkins, games, and Halloween-themed fun.

Check each location's current hours, admission details, and activity schedules before heading out, as offerings can vary throughout the month.

3. Explore October Festivals and Local Events

San Diego has a fantastic lineup of fall festivals, outdoor markets, and community events in October. It's a great excuse to explore a neighborhood you don't visit very often or spend a Saturday supporting local businesses.

A few events to put on your radar include:

La Jolla Art & Wine Festival

Art lovers can browse local and national artists, enjoy live music, and explore the heart of La Jolla Village. It's a wonderful way to spend a fall weekend near the coast.

Ocean Beach Oktoberfest

Ocean Beach brings its own laid-back beach-town energy to Oktoberfest, with festive entertainment, food, and community celebrations.

Del Mar Harvest Festival

Browse handmade goods, discover local artisans, and enjoy a seasonal festival atmosphere in North County.

Halloween at Liberty Station

Liberty Station is a great place to explore throughout the year, but its seasonal Halloween festivities make it especially fun in October. Look for family-friendly activities, entertainment, and opportunities to enjoy the neighborhood.

Event dates and schedules change each year, so check the official event websites before making plans.

4. Experience Halloween at San Diego's Attractions

October is a great month for families looking for Halloween activities without having to travel far.

San Diego Zoo's HalGLOWeen: Enjoy seasonal entertainment, special performances, and Halloween-themed fun at the zoo on select evenings.

SeaWorld San Diego's Halloween Spooktacular: A festive option for families with younger children, with seasonal entertainment and Halloween activities.

Belmont Park's Beachside Fall Fest: Combine classic beachfront amusement park fun with fall-themed activities, seasonal treats, and Halloween celebrations.

LEGOLAND California's Brick-or-Treat: If you're heading to North County with kids, LEGOLAND's Halloween festivities are another fun option to consider.

Be sure to review event dates, ticket requirements, and age recommendations before visiting.

5. Take a Day Trip to Julian

If you're craving a little more of a traditional fall experience, make the drive to Julian.

Located in the mountains east of San Diego, Julian is known for its historic downtown, apple pie, small-town charm, and seasonal fall activities. October is a particularly popular time to visit, with opportunities to explore local shops, enjoy a slice of fresh apple pie, and take in the autumn atmosphere.

Depending on the weekend, you may also find apple-themed activities, pumpkin patches, harvest celebrations, and family-friendly events nearby.

My tip? Go early, especially on weekends, when the town can get busy during peak fall season.

6. Enjoy an Outdoor Adventure

San Diego's outdoor lifestyle is one of the things that makes this area so special. And October is a great time to take advantage of it.

If you're looking for something beyond the beach, consider:

  • Hiking the trails at Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve.
  • Walking or biking around Mission Bay.
  • Exploring the trails and open spaces around Lake Miramar.
  • Taking a scenic walk along the cliffs in Del Mar.
  • Spending a morning exploring Balboa Park's gardens, museums, and architecture.

For a more adventurous day, head inland for a hike or scenic drive through the county's changing landscapes. Just remember to check trail conditions and bring plenty of water, especially on warmer days.

7. Discover a New San Diego Neighborhood

One of my favorite ways to spend a weekend is exploring a neighborhood I haven't visited in a while. San Diego is made up of so many distinct communities, and each offers something a little different.

North Park: Great for independent restaurants, coffee shops, breweries, boutiques, and a lively neighborhood atmosphere.

Little Italy: Perfect for a stroll, a meal at a local restaurant, or a visit to the neighborhood's popular markets and waterfront surroundings.

La Mesa Village: A charming downtown area with local shops, restaurants, and community events.

Encinitas: A mix of surf culture, coastal views, wellness spots, and casual dining.

Point Loma and Liberty Station: Ideal for waterfront walks, restaurants, shopping, and exploring a unique part of San Diego's history.

Exploring these neighborhoods is also a great way to see how diverse San Diego's real estate market really is. Even communities just a short drive apart can offer completely different lifestyles.

8. Catch a San Diego Sunset

Sometimes the best things to do in San Diego don't require tickets, reservations, or much planning at all.

Grab a coffee, take a walk along the coast, or find a spot to watch the sun go down over the Pacific. October evenings can be especially beautiful, and a sunset is an easy way to end a day exploring the city.

Some favorite places to catch the views include Sunset Cliffs, La Jolla Shores, Del Mar's coastline, and Coronado Beach.

Bring a light jacket, find a comfortable spot, and enjoy one of the best parts of living in Southern California.

Why October Is Such a Great Time to Enjoy San Diego

October offers a little bit of everything: warm afternoons, beautiful coastal scenery, seasonal celebrations, outdoor adventures, and plenty of reasons to get out and explore.

It's also a great time to experience San Diego beyond the typical tourist attractions. Spend time in different neighborhoods, try a new restaurant, visit a local festival, or take a drive inland to see another side of the county.

For visitors considering a second home, or anyone thinking about making a move to San Diego, exploring the area this time of year is a great way to get a feel for the lifestyle each community offers.

As a local Realtor, one of my favorite parts of my job is helping people discover not just the right property, but the right neighborhood for the way they want to live.

Whether you're looking for a coastal second home, an investment property, or a place to call home year-round, understanding the unique character of San Diego's neighborhoods is a great place to start.

Have a favorite October activity or local event I missed? San Diego always has something happening, and I'd love to hear your recommendations!
